ASTM A105 / ASME SA-105 Forged Carbon Steel

Socket Weld Design for Schedule XH Pipe

A socket weld flange incorporates a recessed socket designed to receive the outside diameter of the connecting pipe. The Schedule XH (Extra Heavy) pipe is inserted into the socket, positioned with the required installation clearance, and permanently secured using an external fillet weld.

For the same nominal pipe size, Schedule XH pipe generally has a thicker wall and smaller inside diameter than standard-wall pipe while maintaining the same outside diameter. The flange socket is therefore sized for the corresponding nominal pipe outside diameter.

Class 1500 Raised-Face Construction

The Class 1500 designation identifies an ASME pressure class, not a maximum working pressure of 1500 PSI. Actual allowable pressure depends on material, size, operating temperature, and applicable pressure-temperature ratings.

The raised-face (RF) design concentrates bolting force over the elevated gasket seating area, helping establish a dependable seal between compatible mating flanges.
